Mariano Fortuny was born in a Spanish family in 1871. When Mariano’s father passes away, his mother relocates the family to Paris. It is in France where Mariano starts showing a very creative spirit and a strong desire to understand art, science, and technology. In 1889 Mariano moves to Venice where he starts experimenting with textiles and creating scarfs and elegant gowns. Due to his great success, Mr. Fortuny moves his workshop from his house to a former convent by the water, and this the Giudecca factory opens his doors. Due to the scarcity of silk in those years, Mariano starts experimenting with different textiles, especially cotton, creating a proprietary technique to treat it and produce high-quality products. In 1928, New York’s interior designer Elsie McNeill Lee sees Fortuny’s fabrics in the Carnavalet Museum in Paris and decides to represent the brand in the United States. Mariano accepts this offer and the first showroom opens in New York City on Madison Avenue, which brought even greater success for the brand.

Currently, Fortuny fabrics collections feature linens, sheers, velvets, and wools in solid colors, as well as printed cottons in classic and contemporary patterns like damasks, florals, geometrics, and tribals. The brand’s most popular collections are Sectile 1729, The Gatekeeper, The Philosopher’s Stone, W/S 2016: Micromondo, and W/S 2017: Crossroads.
